INTRODUCTION
Our environment is under increasing pressure from population growth and industrial activities. Operational and discharge practices are being challenged by a rising number of international agreements as well as federal state and local regulations.
As controls tighten concerns grow as to how to ensure cost-effective compliance with the new regulations and acceptable solutions that are based on proper environmental science.
Scaltech International’s bioremediation treatment of drill cuttings and contaminated soils provides the lowest total costs for managing hazardous drill cuttings and contaminated soils generated by the Oil & Gas industry.
WHAT IS BIOREMEDIATION?
Bioremediation refers to the use of naturally occurring microorganisms (yeast, fungi or bacteria) to break down hazardous substances into less toxic or nontoxic substances.
The microorganisms break down the organic contaminants into harmless products, mainly carbon dioxide and water.
Scaltech’s bioremediation technology offers an attractive alternative to other remediation processes in terms of its relatively low cost and low environmental impact.
In the biological treatment of hydrocarbon contaminated wastes the microorganisms metabolize the hydrocarbons, converting the hazardous soils in recycling non-hazardous wastes.
Scaltech develops cost-effective bioremediation process for cleaning up contaminated soils and drill cuttings.
Our Services
Scaltech International’s professional team is committed to developing and managing land treatment remediation sites. Based on its knowledge about technical aspects connected to creating optimum environmental conditions for the microorganisms. Scaltech provides both biotreatability studies and construction and operation of full scale land treatment systems.
Scaltech’s bioremediation service includes:
- professional assessment of contaminated soils
- sampling and analytical testing
- lab and pilot scale feasibility studies
- technical recommendations on cost-effective treatment options
- full scale design and operation of in situ and ex situ bioremediation of contaminated soils
- monitoring of soil and water contaminants
The biotreatability study is used by Scaltech’s engineers in order to establish bio-degradation rates and determine optimal operating conditions. System operation and monitoring plans ensure tracking of constituent concentration reductions and migration of constituents into soils beneath the treatment system.
Scaltech’s land farming construction includes:
- pad preparation (grubbing, clearing & grading)
- perimeter berms installation
- facing geomembrane placement
- leachate collection and treatment systems construction/li>
- soil pre-treatment (e.g. shredding, blending and amendments for fluffing, pH control)
Together with its proprietary separation processes, Scaltech provides 2 phase and 3 phase separation processes to guarantee proper soils characteristic to be applied to the land.
LANDFARMING
The principle of land farming is the controlled and repeated application of wastes to the soil surface, using microorganisms in the soil to naturally degrade hydrocarbon constituents, dilute and alternate metals, and transform and assimilate waste constituents.
Scaltech provides a highly engineered program design, tailored both to client needs and to environmental conditions.
Scaltech’s technical expertise assures support to the biological process, monitoring physical and chemical parameters necessary to the most favourable bacterial growth:
- pH
- moisture
- oxygen
- inorganic nutrients
Prior to the construction of the full-scale land treatment plant. Scaltech assesses the proper remediation option suitable for the nature and extent of the chemical substances in the soils.
A laboratory-based study is conducted in order to determine the biodegradability of chemical substances and the ability of the indigenous or introduced micro-organisms to degrade them.
Once fully processed, the resulting non-hazardous solids may be used for construction purposes or capped in situ.
Summary
Scaltech’s bioremediation technology assures an attractive alternative for managing hydrocarbon contaminated soils and drill cuttings.
With Scaltech’s land farming systems drill cuttings and hazardous soils are degraded into non-hazardous soils that can be properly recycled as construction material or disposed to non-hazardous landfill, minimizing the waste impact to the environment.
